This article is from Robert Peng’s latest newsletter. Robert is an extraordinary Qigong Master and the author of the book “Qigong Master: My Life and Secret Teachings”, which we have reviewed on this website and highly recommend, as well as his CD’s and DVD’s. We believe so much in his heartfelt teachings that we have recently just completed his intensive 3 month 12 Cycle Yang Qigong course.
Robert Peng‘s newsletter provides seasonal information from the Chinese calendar as well as giving a simple yet powerful practice called Jieqi Qigong. The transition between Jieqi occurs every two weeks. The universal energies released during the first two hours of the new Jieqi are powerful and auspicious just like the energy surge that follows the start of the New Year. Jieqi Qigong is a practice designed to help us absorb that outpouring of universal Qi energy directly into our spine.

The “Winter Solstice” Empowerment
On Thursday December 22, the 22nd of the 24 seasonal cycles of the Chinese solar calendar begins. This cycle, Winter Solstice (Dongzhi), begins at 12:30 AM EST as the sun reaches 270° Longitude (0° Capricorn).
Winter Solstice is the fourth of the six cycles of winter. The theme of winter is wisdom and authority and over the next fifteen days, as the next seasonal cycle unfolds, nature will reveal essential qualities that you can awaken in yourself and use to align with the flow of life.
In the last cycle, Major Snow, the frosty hand of winter tightened its grip and we countered this trend by insulating our feet and kidneys from the cold and using simple “warming” strategies to keep our internal energies balanced. Over the next fifteen days nature enters a new phase and a new orienting theme will guide her activities.
If we compare the yearly cycle to the daily cycle and set a marker between the first day of spring and dawn, then Winter Solstice corresponds to midnight, the time of greatest darkness or extreme Yin.
During Winter Solstice the Yin force reaches its crowning point as the yearly clock strikes “midnight.” Yin draws energy inwards and is empowered by stillness and passivity and in this seasonal cycle nature manifests those qualities with crystal clarity. Just look around, nature is sound asleep, motionless and regenerating under a blanket of wintry darkness and snow.
The qualities associated with Winter Solstice are the qualities associated with deep restful sleep. During this cycle we focus on the importance of rest and the quality of our sleep. Your Yin Qi energy is replenished while you slumber and the better the quality of your sleep, the more powerful your Yin Qi becomes. Recall waking up in the morning after the best sleep you’ve ever had. Isn’t wholesome sleep a powerful healing balm? This overflowing abundance of Yin Qi energy is the goal we embrace during this seasonal cycle.
Since sleep is a passive activity and largely unconscious we tend to ignore the importance healthy sleep plays in our daily lives. From the Qigong perspective, however, the quality of our sleep is the best indicator of the overall quality of our life.
How would you describe the quality of your sleep? Is it deep or shallow, peaceful or troubled? During Winter Solstice, as nature slumbers deepest, strive to become especially attuned to the “texture” of your sleep. When you wake up in the morning over the next fifteen days ask yourself, How did I sleep? What did I dream about? What important message is my Yin psyche communicating? Then begin to address the issues raised by sleep in your waking life. Allow the wisdom of night be your daily guide and watch your life improve.
Another practical step you can take to enhance the quality of your sleep and boost your Yin Qi is to do the Winter Solstice Empowerment. The empowerment takes place on December 22nd between 12:30 – 2:30 AM EST (remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone).
We encourage you to practice this powerful qigong! For both written and video instructions on how to do the qigong empowerment go to: http://web.me.com/robertpeng9/Circle_of_Cosmic_Qi/Winter_Solstice.html
The Winter Solstice seasonal cycle lasts until January 5th, 2012 at 5:43 AM EST when the fifth cycle of winter begins. Until then I wish you a happy holiday season and peaceful snowy nights.
Good Qi,
