This article is from Robert Peng’s latest newsletter. Robert is an extraordinary Qigong Master and the author of the book “Qigong Master: My Life and Secret Teachings”, which we have reviewed on this website and highly recommend, as well as his CD’s and DVD’s. We believe so much in his heartfelt teachings that we have recently just completed his intensive 3 month 12 Cycle Yang Qigong course.
Robert Peng‘s newsletter provides seasonal information from the Chinese calendar as well as giving a simple yet powerful practice called Jieqi Qigong. The transition between Jieqi occurs every two weeks. The universal energies released during the first two hours of the new Jieqi are powerful and auspicious just like the energy surge that follows the start of the New Year. Jieqi Qigong is a practice designed to help us absorb that outpouring of universal Qi energy directly into our spine.

On Tuesday November 22, the 20h of the 24 yearly seasonal cycles of the Chinese solar calendar begins. This cycle, Minor Snow (Xiaoxue), begins at 11:08 AM EST when the sun reaches 240° Longitude (0° Sagittarius).
Minor Snow is the second of the six cycles of winter. The theme of winter is wisdom and authority and over the next fifteen days nature will enter a new stage of development and reveal unique characteristics as the seasonal cycle unfolds.
In Northern China, during this cycle, snow flurries paint the landscape white and in Southern China cold rain muddies the countryside. Although the color palette varies throughout the country, Minor Snow is a time when the environment becomes harsher and less pleasant.
Snow fall looks pretty through a window but trudging through the cold wind is not fun. Neither is having to wait for the bus in the biting rain. Instinctively, we “brace” against the cold by tightening up. We tighten our muscles, our fists, and even our face. It’s hard to smile when we feel cold. The frigid environment makes us rigid and that tightness impedes the flow of Qi, weakens our immune system, and rattles our emotional balance.
If you watched a “chilling” thriller on television your body would tighten instinctively for an obvious reason—fear. But imagine the effect on your body and mind if you remained “frozen” in that state for months and months. To some degree, this is what happens to us in the wintertime and if we don’t take preventative measures to counterbalance the stress of winter we become energetically depleted by the stress of cold. The winter blues reflect this condition.
So what can you do to protect yourself from the stress of winter? Fight the spreading coldness by spreading warmth. Imagine soaking in a cozy bubble bath after being caught in the cold. You bask in the warmth and sigh… You slid into the tub hardened by the cold and slid out fifteen minutes later soft and toasty. The warmth melted away the harshness of winter and now your organs are happy and your mind is relaxed.
During Minor Snow, as the external environment becomes increasingly jarring, indulge in luxuriating pleasures. Treat yourself to a warm meal that spreads warmth to all your internal organs. Hug someone you love and cultivate warmth internally through fun activities that spike your body temperature like exercise and sports. Fight off winter by being positive, spoiling yourself, and having a good time.
Practicing the Minor Snow Empowerment will enhance your experience of winter by bringing additional warmth you your internal organs. The empowerment takes place on Tuesday November 22 between 11:08 AM – 1:08 PM EST (remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone).
The Minor Snow seasonal cycle lasts until December 7th at 6:28 AM EST when the third cycle of winter begins. Until then, cheer up and treat yourself to some good, warm fun!
Good Qi!
