Fabien Maman is a musician, composer, acupuncturist, author, researcher, teacher, “bioenergetician” and martial artist. As an accomplished musician, he performed his original compositions in the great concert halls of the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Tokyo Opera, the Paris Olympia and the Berlin Philharmonic.
Fabien has taught and lectured around the world. He is the author of a several books: The Role of Music in the Twenty-First Century, Raising Human Frequencies, The Body as a Harp-Sound and Acupuncture, and Healing with Sound, Color and Movement-Nine Revolutionary Healing Techniques, and Accessing the Way of the Soul Through Color: From Star to Cell
Fabien Maman explored and documented the influence of sound waves on the cells of the body in the early 1980s. He was fascinated with energetic healing techniques, and wondered if we are really touched or even changed by music. If so, how deeply does sound travel into our bodies? He and Helene Grimal studied the effects of low volume sound (30-40 decibels) on human cells. They mounted a camera on a microscope where they had placed slides of human uterine cancer cells; and then proceeded to play various acoustical instruments (guitar, gong, xylophone as well as voice) for periods of twenty-minutes, while they observed the effects on the cells.
These pictures were taken while a xylophone was used over a period of fourteen minutes playing the Ionian Scale (nine musical notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B- and C and D from the next octave above.) “The structure quickly disorganized. Fourteen minutes was enough time to explode the cell when I used these nine different frequencies”, says Maman. The most dramatic influence on the cells came from the human voice when Maman sang the same scale into the cells. In this experiment the cancer cells experienced a total explosion within nine minutes. “The human voice carries something in its vibration that makes it more powerful than any musical instrument: consciousness…. It appeared that the cancer cells were not able to support a progressive accumulation of vibratory frequencies and were destroyed,” reports Maman.
His findings in the laboratory setting urged Maman to continue his study, but this time he chose to work with two breast cancer patients. Each woman committed to tone for three-and-a-half hours per day over a period of a month. In one case, the tumor vanished completely. The second woman underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Her surgeon reported that the tumor had reduced in size considerably, and had literally dried up. She recovered fully from the surgery and made a complete recovery. Maman’s explanation for this incredible phenomenon was substantiated by the photographs he had taken during his case studies. He says, “the cancer cells show evidence of cell nuclei incapable of maintaining their structure as the sound wave frequencies attack the cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes.” The vibration of sound literally transforms the cell structure. As the voice intensifies and time passes with no break in sound, the vibratory rate becomes too powerful, and the cells cannot adapt or stabilize themselves. Therefore, the cell dies because it is not able to accommodate its structure and synchronize with the collection of sound. They cannot live in an atmosphere of dissonance and they cannot become resonant with the body. Therefore, the tumor cells destabilize, disorganize, disintegrate, explode and are ultimately destroyed in the presence of pure sound.
Acoustic vs Synthetic Sounds In Healing Matter
It is important in my perspective, to separate natural/acoustic sounds and artificial/synthetic sounds. Their respective effects are not the same. During the time of my musical career, I found on stage as well as in the recording studio that natural instruments sounded much better than any electric or electronic instrument and their “aura“ were more musical.
My sound engineer and artistic director in my first recording, Jacques Lubin from Barclay’s record company, used to say: “there is more music in your acoustic guitar than in any electric guitar…” Maybe it would have been more accurate to say “there are more harmonics, overtones in your music”.
Harmonics (overtones) create the musicality of any instrument; the resonance generates the timbre.
Later, as I worked in sound research, utilizing experiments with cells under the influence of sound, I realized the importance of the quality of the harmonics, and how different it is, between these two sources of sound,(acoustic versus synthetic) when it comes to measuring the impact of resonance into human cells.
I discovered that the real power of using sound for healing resides only in the harmonics, not in the sound itself. So only acoustic instruments (not electric or electronic) can be used for Sound healing!
What is an electric guitar? A plastic frame with an electric chord. Such an object doesn’t have any intrinsic life, it’s an i-pod… The amplification creates “pseudo harmonics”, through the electric circuit they pass to become audible: these harmonics are not natural, they are not what we call “acoustic”. So there is no healing substance.
This has a significant impact in therapy! When I sound a metal tube with a wood-velvet hammer, I get practically the full range of overtones depending on the strike. On the other hand, a tuning fork emits overtones which penetrate the energy field and then the organ of the physical body. We can check the sound impact in the organic structure by taking the Chinese pulses in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
In sound therapy, the quality of the resonance of full range of natural overtones is the main warrant of the state of relaxation.
Producing overtones with the voice or an acoustic instrument is the major tool to release stress; and the results of my cellular experiments proved this to be true.
In fact my findings in the cell experiments lead me to the creation of Tama-Do Academy in 1988.
Love and Chi!
